Rain Forest

Today we finally were on our way to the Tropical Rain Forest. It was about an hour's drive north from Port Douglas. It was nice and sunny out. When we drove on the ferry for the crossing, which is the only way to access the Rain Forest, it started raining. This was actually lucky. What better time to be in a Rain Forest then when it's raining. We stopped at the Jindilba board work. Which was a walk way made out of boards/planks. Like a pier. It rained during our walk. Although we did not get wet. While it rains a lot there, not a lot of rain makes it all they down to the ground. It lands on the canopy.

We got lucky to see a real live Cassowary in the Forest. They are large birds. A little bigger then a big turkey. They are really hard to find. They sit right next to the trees like a big dirt mound. Apparently they are pretty dangerous. Some how they can jump and kick you with their razor sharp toes. We got a few pictures and moved on.

I stopped to wait for everyone to catch up. When I took off I noticed I had been standing by an enormous spiderweb. And yes, an enormous spider. I have no idea if it was poisinous. I don't think I want to know.

We continued on for our final destination, Cape Tribulation. Of course we stopped for ice cream twice before we got there. And we only drove about 10 miles. The night before we decided instead of packing a lunch we would stop along the way. Big mistake. There was really no place to stop. We stopped at a little convenience store. A small package of chips was $6.00. So we picked up some salami and crackers to get us through until we got back to Port Douglas.

Cape Trib is the only place in the world where two world heritage sites meet, the great barrier reef and a tropical rain forest. Also, there are not many places in the world where the Rain forest meets the ocean.

Sitting on the beach having a few beers. Too bad we couldn't cool off in the ocean for fear of jelly fish and we could not sit in the shade for fear of crocodiles. Bob said, 'we have turned our back to death only to look death in the face!'.

We stopped on the beach and soaked up the sun and enjoyed the beautiful Cape Trib scenery. There is a fruit orchard on the cape. We wanted to stop there for a fruit tasting which they have every day at 2:00. For $20/person we decided against it.

Bob and Mike saw a snake on the way back to the car from the beach. This is the one and only snake any of us saw on the whole trip. Thank goodness. I really didn't want to see any. Bob said his trip was complete. He got to see all the animals in the wild that he was hoping to see.

Kangaroo, koala, crocodile, snake and cassowary.
